Serological Relationships among and between the Streptococci and Pneumococci
نویسنده
چکیده
Using the complement fixation reaction with whole bacterial solutions as antigens, it has been possible to confirm the existence, within the non-hemolytic streptococcus family, of two great groups. One of these groups, that which may be designated as of the left side, is related in an orderly way to the hemolytic streptococci; the other of the right side, is similarly related to the entire pneumococcus family. In addition, the hemolytic streptococcus family shows a reactive range which relates it, though less closely, to the non-hemolytic streptococci of the right side, and to the pneumococci. The existence of these cross-relationships is not associated with the precipitable substance of either family, but may tentatively be presumed to be dependent upon the properties of the protein or lipoid-protein fraction of the bacterial cell.

Distribution of subclasses mefA and mefE of the mefA gene among clinical isolates of macrolide-resistant (M-phenotype) Streptococcus pneumoniae, viridans group streptococci, and Streptococcus pyogenes.
The distribution of subclasses mefA and mefE of the mefA gene among 116 M-phenotype streptococci was as follows: pneumococci (38 strains had mefE and 4 mefA), viridans streptococci (49 mefE and 1 mefA), and Streptococcus pyogenes (24 mefA). Spain(9V)-3-14 and England(14)-9 clones of serotype 14 were dominant among pneumococci.
متن کاملTwo Serological Types of Group B Hemolytic Streptococci with Related, but Not Identical, Type-specific Substances
1. Among group B hemolytic streptococci one serological type previously described as homogeneous has been shown, instead, to contain two closely related types, distinguishable by reciprocal absorption experiments. These streptococci are designated Types Ia and Ib. 2. Homologous organisms in each case absorb all antibodies from their respective antisera, while organisms of the heterologous relat...
متن کاملSurvival of Pneumococci and Streptococci Cultures in the Dry State
The following is an observation on the survival of dry cultures of pneumococci and streptococci for seven years under unusual and adverse conditions of storage. Dry cultures of 27 pneumococci and 10 streptococci prepared by the Division of Laboratories and Research of the Department of Health of New York (Wadsworth, 1939) were given to the author on 17th July, 1940. All the cultures were examin...
متن کاملSerological Relationships of Type-specific and Degraded Pneumococci
1. Immune sera prepared with the degraded or variant forms of pneumococci (R strains) are similar in their reactions to sera prepared with the protein or cell solutions of pneumococci. They contain antibodies reactive with the protein of all types of pneumococci, but no antibodies reactive with the type-specific substances. 2. Pneumococci of the variant or R form, regardless of type derivation,...

Background and Objective: Attention has largely been focused on appearance of multiple drug resistance enterococci in the last 20 years. One of the methods to overcome this problem is to combine different antibiotics in order to increase antimicrobial activity and reduce toxicity. The combination of fluor quinolones with other antibiotics has been widely investigated. The aim of this study was ...
